原産地：北アメリカ / North America
日本には17世紀に伝来。ヒマワリは、１６世紀にスペインに渡り、１８世紀にはヒマワリ油がヨーロッパで人気になった。特にロシア正教の信者にとって、ヒマワリの種は、斎（ものいみ）の期間の禁止食品のリストに掲載されていない貴重な油脂食品だった。
Sunflower was introduced into Japan in the 17th century, and into Spain early in the 16th century.
During the 18th century, the use of sunflower oil became very popular in Europe, particularly with members of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Because sunflower oil was one of the few oils that was not prohibited during Lent, according to some fasting traditions.
